The challenge
The flats in this Islington social housing block needed new kitchens, bathrooms, heating and insulation, and the communal areas needed bringing up to date. The residents wanted modern homes. The council wanted the building's character protected. And the whole programme had to happen around people living their lives — without moving a single resident out.

Every resident stayed at home for the whole programme. The block now has modern kitchens and bathrooms, efficient heating, better insulation and refreshed communal areas, and from the street it still looks exactly like itself.
