Big-contract discipline, in your home
Every year we refurbish more than 1,000 empty homes for councils, housing associations and landlords, to specifications and timescales they hold us to. That discipline comes with us into your home: our own directly employed trades, one site manager who runs your job, a written programme and the paperwork done properly. We have been in business for over a decade, and we are based in Barnet, at 429 Oakleigh Road North, N20.
What we build
We build single- and double-storey extensions, including rear, side-return and wraparound designs, and dormer, hip-to-gable, mansard and rooflight loft conversions. We also refurbish whole houses, from rewiring, heating, kitchens and bathrooms to roofs and structural alterations, and build new homes from the ground up. In Camden we brought a Victorian house up to date while keeping its cornicing, fireplaces and original floors.
Drawings, planning and building regulations
We work with your architect and structural engineer and handle planning permission and building regulations approval for you. We will tell you early whether your project is likely to fall under permitted development or need full planning permission. If the work affects a wall you share with a neighbour, we'll help you arrange the party wall notices.
Living with the build
You can usually stay at home while we work, so we plan the job to keep your house usable. Floors and furniture are protected, dust is controlled and the site is left tidy at the end of every day. A price you can read, a programme you can plan around
After a site visit you get a written, itemised quote that shows exactly what is included, and a programme showing each stage of the build. If something changes, because you choose a different finish or we uncover a problem behind a wall, we explain it and price it before any extra work goes ahead.
Finished, signed off and guaranteed
Before we hand over, we walk through the work with you and put right anything that needs attention. You receive the building control completion certificate, the electrical and gas certificates where they apply, and our two-year workmanship guarantee. It is how we finished a rear extension in Greenwich, a loft master suite in Kensington, a large residential build in Richmond and a new build here in Barnet.

Pre-start meeting
You meet your site manager, and we agree start dates, working hours, access, storage and how we will protect the rest of your home.

The build
Our own trades work in a planned sequence, building control inspects at key stages, and your site manager keeps you updated as each stage is completed.

Handover and aftercare

Do you handle planning permission and building regulations?
Yes. AGL works with your architect and structural engineer, takes care of the planning application or confirms that your project is permitted development, and secures building regulations approval, with building control sign-off at the end.
Will one person manage my project?

Can I stay in my home while the work is done?
You can usually stay at home while AGL carries out your extension, loft conversion or refurbishment. We protect floors and furniture, control dust, keep the site tidy and tell you in advance about the most disruptive stages.
How do you price an extension or loft conversion?
We visit, understand what you want and give you a written, itemised quote, so you can see exactly what is included. If you ask for a change or we find something unexpected, we explain it and price it before any extra work goes ahead.
Is your work guaranteed?
Yes. Every AGL project is backed by our two-year workmanship guarantee from completion, and products such as windows, doors and boilers carry their manufacturer's own warranty.
Do you use your own tradespeople?
Yes. Most of the work is carried out by AGL's own directly employed carpenters, bricklayers, roofers, plasterers, electricians, Gas Safe registered engineers, tilers and decorators. Where a specialist is needed, we bring in vetted specialists and supervise them through our own site managers.
